REPUBLICAN ADDRESS FOR MEMORIAL DAY ARMED SERVICES CHAIRMAN MAC THORNBERRY

 

Delivering the Weekly Republican Address is Representative Mac Thornberry (Republican -Texas), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Ahead of Memorial Day, Chairman Thornberry calls on President Obama to honor our troops by backing the National Defense Authorization Act, which the House passed last week.

Hello, I’m Mac Thornberry.  I’m privileged to represent the people of the Panhandle and North Texas in Congress and to chair the House Armed Services Committee.

In my job I get to spend a lot of time around the men and women who serve our nation in the military.  I’m continually in awe of their character, their courage, and their dedication to our country.

Since the beginning, the United States has been blessed with outstanding individuals who cared about something bigger than themselves and have fought – and some even died – for American security and American freedom.

This Memorial Day, we continue to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.  The Greatest Generation took on one of the greatest evils the world has ever known, defeated it, and came home to build a nation.

But their achievement came at a heavy price.  On Memorial Day, all of us should take time to remember and to honor those who sacrificed their lives in answering the call of our country.

I think we have to do more than honor the fallen, however.  We have a duty to honor what they fought for, so that, in the words of Lincoln at Gettysburg, “we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.”

The world today is full of turmoil.  Freedom and decency are still under assault.  ISIS, for example, poses a grave and direct threat to our security and our way of life.

No one knows how to solve all the problems of the world.  But one thing we do know for sure – the world is a safer, better place when the United States is militarily strong.  And a weakened America invites greater danger.

The Constitution endows Congress with specific responsibilities to help “provide for the common defense.”   For 53 straight years, Congresses of both parties have passed and presidents of both parties have signed into law a defense authorization act, which has helped to build that military strength that we need.  The House passed this year’s bill last week.  It gives our troops a raise and updates their benefits.  It eases our warfighters’ transition to the VA and it makes sure we get the most value possible for the taxpayer dollars.  The Senate will take up their version soon.

The House bill authorized exactly the amount the president requested to keep America safe.  But he wants more money for domestic programs and has threatened to veto the defense bill unless he gets it.

Look, we’re always going to have our differences, but it’s wrong for anyone to play politics with defense.  The world is too dangerous, and the men and women who serve are too precious for that.

We carry a debt to those who have served, and especially to those who have fallen, to focus just on doing what’s right for the country and what’s right for our troops, and we honor them best by building on their sacrifice to pass along to the next generation a country even stronger, even more prosperous, and even freer than we’ve enjoyed.

Of course, no one put it better than Ronald Reagan when he said, “and we owe them something…We owe them a promise to look at the world with a steady gaze and, perhaps, a resigned toughness, knowing that we have adversaries in the world and challenges and the only way to meet them and maintain the peace is by staying strong.”

When this Memorial Day’s passed, there will still be brave Americans stationed all over the world to protect us and our way of life.

Hola, soy Mac Thornberry. Tengo el privilegio de representar al pueblo de la región del Panhandle y el Norte de Texas en el Congreso y al presidente del Comité de Servicios Armados de la Cámara.

En mi trabajo tengo la oportunidad de pasar mucho tiempo en torno a los hombres y mujeres que sirven a nuestra nación en el ejército. Estoy continuamente en el temor de su carácter, su valentía y su dedicación a nuestro país.

Desde el principio, los Estados Unidos ha sido bendecido con individuos sobresalientes que se preocupaba por algo más grande que ellos mismos y han luchado - y algunos incluso murieron - para la seguridad estadounidense y la libertad americana.

Este Día de los Caídos, continuamos con motivo del 70 aniversario del fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La generación más grande tomó uno de los mayores males que el mundo jamás haya conocido, lo derrotó, y llegó a casa para construir una nación.

Pero su logro se produjo en un precio muy alto. En el Día de los Caídos, todos debemos tomar tiempo para recordar y honrar a aquellos que sacrificaron sus vidas en responder a la llamada de nuestro país.

Creo que tenemos que hacer más que honrar a los caídos, sin embargo. Tenemos el deber de honrar lo que ellos lucharon por, por lo que, en palabras de Lincoln en Gettysburg, "que aquí decidamos que estos muertos no habrán muerto en vano."

El mundo de hoy está lleno de confusión. La libertad y la decencia son todavía bajo asalto. ISIS, por ejemplo, plantea un grave y amenaza directa a nuestra seguridad y nuestra forma de vida.

Nadie sabe cómo resolver todos los problemas del mundo. Pero hay una cosa que sí sabemos a ciencia cierta - el mundo es un mejor lugar más seguro, cuando Estados Unidos es militarmente fuerte. Y un Estados Unidos debilitado invita mayor peligro.

La Constitución otorga al Congreso con responsabilidades específicas para ayudar a "proveer a la defensa común." Por 53 años consecutivos, los Congresos de ambos partidos han pasado y los presidentes de ambos partidos han firmado en ley un acto de autorización de defensa, lo que ha ayudado a construir esa fuerza militar que necesitamos. La Cámara aprobó proyecto de ley de este año la semana pasada. Le da a nuestras tropas un aumento y actualiza sus beneficios. Facilita la transición nuestros combatientes "a la VA y se asegura de que obtenemos el mayor valor posible para los dólares de los contribuyentes. El Senado vuelve a asumir su versión pronto.

El proyecto de la Cámara autorizó exactamente la cantidad que el presidente pidió mantener seguro a Estados Unidos. Pero él quiere más dinero para los programas nacionales y ha amenazado con vetar el proyecto de ley de defensa a menos que lo consiga.

Mira, nosotros siempre vamos a tener nuestras diferencias, pero es malo para cualquier persona para jugar a la política con la defensa. El mundo es demasiado peligroso, y los hombres y mujeres que sirven son demasiado preciosos para eso.

Llevamos una deuda con aquellos que han servido, y en especial a los que han caído, al centrarse sólo en hacer lo correcto para el país y lo que es correcto para nuestras tropas, y los honramos mejor mediante la construcción de su sacrificio para pasar junto a la siguiente generación un país aún más fuerte, aún más próspera, e incluso más libre que hemos disfrutado.

Por supuesto, nadie lo expresó mejor que Ronald Reagan cuando dijo, "y nosotros les debemos algo ... Les debemos una promesa a mirar el mundo con una mirada firme y, tal vez, una tenacidad de resignación, sabiendo que tenemos adversarios en el mundo y los desafíos y la única manera de conocer a ellos y mantener la paz es al permanecer fuerte ".

Cuando de pasar este Día de los Caídos, todavía habrá valientes estadounidenses estacionadas en todo el mundo para proteger a nosotros y nuestra forma de vida.
